Durmitor and Tara

Durmitor, MontenegroDurmitor is the mighty mountain-mass, bordered by narrow and deep river canyons of the Tara, Piva, Susica and Komarnica. It presents a highland plain with 30 dominating peaks of more than 2,000 m high (the highest mountain – Bobotov Kuk is 2522 m). In order to preserve its unique nature, the Durmitor and Tara canyon have been given status of National Park. In 1980 it was included to the UNESCO list of world natural heritage.

The flora of Durmitor is rather diverse. About 14 species of curative herbs grow here. Rich fauna gives good opportunities for hunting. It's allowed to hunt fox, hare, wolf, wild boar, bear, roe deer, heath-cock at Durmitor.

The central point of the Durmitor National Park is a ski resort Zabljak (1465 m above the sea level). It is the highest town in the Balkan region. Zabljak is interesting for visitors in all seasons. Firstly it is an excellent mountain ski centre with perfectly equipped slopes as well as possibilities for free riding. Ski season lasts until the middle of April. Also there are numerous routes for cross-country skiing around the town. It's still a lot of amusements in spring and summer. Opportunities for mountaineering, marked walking routes, excursions to ice-caves and the cascade of glacier lakes are at your service. The Tara canyon is attractive for rafting lovers from different countries. If you are not ready to raft by yourself, you can find here several programs for beginners with all needed equipment and with guiding of skilled instructors.

But this region is famous not only for its beautiful nature. We recommend you to visit the ruins of ancient city Soko (XIII-XV) that is situated on the rock, 400 m above the place of confluence of the Piva and the Tara where they form the Drina River. You can get there by the motorway from Niksic. This road goes along the sheer wall of the Piva canyon, constantly passing through numerous tunnels. Marvellous view on flooded canyon (a hydroelectric power station was built here in 1967-75) and the extreme road conditions undoubtedly will make this experience unforgettable.

Piva Monastery, Pluzine, MontenegroIn 4 km to the South of Pluzine there is a Piva Monastery that was built in XVI and decorated with frescos of well-known Boka (Kotor) school. Piva is the only Serbian monastery, which was found during Turkish occupation. It had taken place in quite calm period, when Serb Mehmed-Pasha Sokolovic was one of Turkish viziers.

If you are going to Montenegro by car or by bus from Serbia you should make a stop in town Pljevlja. Here you can see the excavations of ancient Roman settlement Municipium S. (its full name isn’t known), Holy Trinity Monastery and a very beautiful mosque of Hussein-Pasha Boljanic.
