Pljevlja
The main sight of Pljevlja is the small Hussein-Pasha Mosque built in 1562, that mainly has kept its original appearance. New 42-metre minaret amazing by its height and elegance was added in 1911. The Mosque is one of the most beautiful monuments of Orient architecture in the Balkans, built on the model of Byzantine five-dome churches, and richly decorated in the Persian and Arabic style. Two kilometres away from the town, there is another church monument, Holly Trinity Orthodox Monastery built in the XII century. The church was repainted with frescoes in 1592-1595. In the rich vestry, there is a silver pyx of the XVI century having special significance. Southwest from Pljevlja in Komini village, on the area of few hectares, the remains of ancient Roman town with walls, monumental structures, town streets and necropolises were found. Today the archeological sites are accessible for visitors. But in historical records only the first letter of the town name is extant, so this place is conditionally named “Municipium S”. |
