Ulcinj, MontenegroUlcinj is the most southern town of Montenegro. It was founded by Greek. It’s present name the town obtained while being in the possession of Roman, and during Turkish governing it was the “capital” of Mediterranean pirates. According to the legend, Miguel de Cervantes, Spanish novelist, had been a prisoner of the pirates here. In the Balsica Tower lived the famous interpreter of Talmud, the leader of Jewish uprising in Osman Empire Shabbetai Tzvi. He died in Ulcinj in 1676, had adopted Islam, under the name of Aziz Mehmet Efendi.

As the place of interest a church – mosque, nowadays a museum, should be mentioned. Here one can observe the main relicts, that have been found while excavations. In the Balsica Tower now an art gallery is situated. Between the Tower and the museum there is a small square – former slave’s market. During the Venetian period two palaces were constructed in Ulcinj – Palacco Venecia and Balsica Dvori. Now they are turned into cozy hotels.

The best view on the Old town Ulcinj is opening from the Small Beach, that lies between fortresses and the peninsula Ratislav. The beach is only 376 m long. It’s fine silky sand, with naturally heightened degree of radiation, is very health-giving for people suffering from rheumatism.
